In order to ensure high quality practical capacity of graduates, the department operates laboratories which are used by students for performing experiments. These are the Power, Electronics, Communications, Satellite and Electronics laboratories.
ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING (HIGH VOLTAGE & POWER) LABORATORIES
Here, experiments on the operating characteristics of electrical machines such as induction motors and d.c and synchronous motors and generators are performed. Experiments on applied electricity and engineering technology as well as other associated courses are performed in this laboratory.
This is where experiments on basic, linear and power electronics are performed. The technology used is a product of Degem Systems and is of very high quality. Other experiments conducted here include topics on Digital Systems, Microprocessors and Control Systems. The electronics laboratory serves students from the Electrical/Electronic Engineering Department and the Computer Engineering Department. The laboratory is run by Rose Frimpong (Mrs.), a Senior Technician of the College.
The college of Engineering boasts of a communications laboratory which is equipped with HP workstations together with consoles and other accessories by Degem Systems®. It provides in-depth explanation of concepts as well as practical simulations to enhance understanding.Here, students perform tests, run simulations and do comparative analyses on selected modules, relating to students’ coursework. The modules fall in two categories: Analog and Digital Communication. Each module comprises a number of boards to be slotted into the main console, and for each board, there are a number of lessons to be treated.
This facility is available to students offering Electrical/Electronic, Telecommunication, Computer and Biomedical Engineering disciplines within the College. The Laboratory is currently run by Mr. Maxwell Afriyie.
The satellite laboratory contains television sets, decoders and oscilloscopes connected in a network and is fed by a rotary satellite on the roof of the building capable of receiving digital television signals from various transmitting satellites in space. The modules or decoders are used to analyze the signals received in real time and analyze them. The bit error rate, modulation index, and other parameters of importance to determined to analyze the signal quality of the satellite services.
